While Jelgava Castle was once home to the Dukes of Courland and Zemgale, today it is the headquarters of the Latvian University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU), one of the leading science universities in Latvia. It promotes the creation, transfer and practical application of knowledge in the fields of biosciences, engineering and social sciences. With roots stretching back more than 160 years, the university proudly combines tradition with a modern outlook and a global perspective.

LBTU is the only place in Latvia where it is possible to study veterinary medicine, landscape architecture, forestry, agricultural engineering, woodworking, food technology, food quality and innovation. At the same time, the university also offers a wide range of study programs in areas such as agriculture, environmental sciences, engineering, information technology, as well as social sciences. These programs are available at all three levels – bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral – providing an excellent opportunity to choose your future path and build interdisciplinary knowledge for a sustainable future.

The university boasts a modern scientific base and international research – from laboratories and field research stations to innovation centers. Our students and faculty actively participate in international projects, create new technologies and discover solutions to current environmental and social problems.

Study time is not just about studying and gaining experience in research. LBTU study and especially extracurricular time gives a special flavor to student life. Life in student hotels, cultural events, sports activities create added value to studies.

LBTU is an internationally recognized science university, as evidenced by its participation in various international rankings of higher education institutions – Times Higher Education, Multirank, QS World University rankings. In them, the university is evaluated using a variety of criteria: study environment, faculty competencies, proportion of foreign students, research, citation of scholarly publications, knowledge transfer, academic reputation, etc.

LBTU has also purposefully preserved the traditions of student choirs, dance groups and theatre, which help students develop the ability to inspire, motivate and persuade others. In addition, from the first day of study, every student has the opportunity to compete in LBTU’s various sports teams. In total, approximately 20 sports are represented, the most elite of which is equestrian sports.

Jelgava Castle, on the territory of which LBTU is located, is built on an island between two rivers – Lielupe and Driksa

Hockey team

LBTU has its own hockey team – “Zemgale/LBTU”, which participates in the Latvian championship and actively represents the university in sports.

Jelgava Castle Museum

The Jelgava Castle Museum is located in the main building of LBTU, which has been visited by 10,429 people, including 7700 from Latvia and 2729 from abroad.
