Art & Science Day is an open event dedicated to bringing together two worlds that are often perceived as distant from one another – art and science. Organised under the auspices of the ChallengeEU Alliance, the event aims to show that, in reality, they are much closer than we tend to think: both help us explore reality, ask questions, experiment and seek new ways of describing the world. We invite you to a series of open lectures, workshops and exhibitions on 15 October at the UWM University Library. The main theme of Art & Science Day at UWM will be sound – a phenomenon that can be studied, measured, interpreted and used creatively at the same time. Together with UWM academics, we will explore it from different perspectives, showing how much the approaches of scientists and artists can have in common. The programme will include open lectures streamed online, as well as workshops and a meeting at the company headquarters of one of our partners. Dr Sławomir Kulesza, Prof. UWM, will explain the physical nature of sound as a propagating longitudinal mechanical wave, while also encouraging participants to experiment and explore the phenomenon themselves. The presentation by Dr Marcin Piotrowicz will, in turn, introduce an artistic practice situated at the intersection of art and science, in which sound – understood as vibration and wave – becomes a visual and sculptural medium. Dr Agnieszka Jaszczak, Prof. UWM, will remind us that the soundscape is an integral part of our surroundings, shaping the way we perceive and experience space. Two exhibitions will also be presented at the UWM University Library as part of Art & Science Day. One of them is by Dr Marcin Piotrowicz from the UWM Faculty of Arts, whose work brings together two of his great passions: music and visual arts. The second exhibition features works by students from universities forming the ChallengeEU Alliance – authors of posters visualising the idea of “In Unity”. The interactive workshop led by Dr Czesław Kiński will serve as a reminder that art is our first universal language, one that subtly influences the way we perceive reality every day, whether consciously or not. Under his guidance, participants will move from passive reception of art towards actively building a relationship with it and discovering the works that help define who they are. A unique opportunity to see how passion can develop into a business idea will be offered by a ChallengeEU M.A.R.K.E.T. Activity – a meeting with employees of the Olsztyn-based company Polyend. Musical instruments designed in the capital of Warmia are used by outstanding artists from around the world. They were also used in the creation of the music for the Oscar-winning film Joker. All activities planned for 15 October will create a space for jointly discovering how science and art can complement and inspire one another and lead to new ideas. Art & Science Day will be an opportunity to listen, experiment, ask questions and cross the boundaries between disciplines. Please note! The lectures and workshops will be held in English. The workshops will be held in person only. Registration is required for the workshop with Dr Czesław Kiński and the meeting with representatives of Polyend. Participants selected for the M.A.R.K.E.T. Activity at the company’s premises on Wioślarska Street will be able to use organised transport. Further information will be provided after registration. >>> Registration: Building Your Cultural Sixpack: How We Encounter, Process, and Own Art >>> Registration: ChallengeEU M.A.R.K.E.T.
